Book front cover

Hi all, so this is some shameless self promotion on my part but hey, its been 10 months of work so I feel justified! I’ve finally finished my book on Unity, called “Unity Game Development Essentials” which is going to press with Packt Publishing this week.

It has been available through the publisher’s RAW program in early draft form for a couple of months and this week the finished version will be available to buy as PDF and Paperback via Amazon, Safari, Netlibrary, barnes and nobles and borders.

Hope it helps out beginners starting out in the wonderful world of Unity development!

Will

Will, congrats! I’ve been perusing through the RAW version so far, and am areally impressed by the detail you went into to describe each nuance of the GUI and setup of assets to create the game. Do you happen to know when they might be shipping? I am more of a hard-copy type guy, and it’ll make it easier to read and do at the same time.

    Thanks!

PS: I bought the RAW and book combo ;-)

version. Is this book any good? Heck, it made me buy Unity.

An unique work in the market imho, it allows anyone to be able to dive
into game design in a clear, well written work.

I dont think i could start scripting in Unity without this book… but thanks
to this book i feel like i have been given the tools to design a game by
    myself. 5 stars!

    Good luck with the sales!
That means buy a mansion, stack on coffee and write an iphone game

Cheers again, really glad it got you into Unity! all the best

  • Abdullah, you’re very welcome, really glad you’re enjoying the book, remember that you can get the final PDF if you already bought the raw from the PAckt website. Also if you have any time to write a reader review for amazon i’d really appreciate it! enjoy Unity!

  • I’ve just bought the PAckt version and, so far, I’m loving the book (entering chapter 3 now).

I was particularly happy about the Flash analogies throughout the book – they really help me understand better Unity concepts.

I’ll enter the scripting tutorials soon (not my forte), and I hope I can gain more knowledge about the subject.

Again, thanks for writing the book – it’s really worth the investment.

  • Hey Chico thanks, yeah I used Flash & Director (eek) before Unity so it made sense to me to draw such parallels, hopefully this will help anyone else making such a transition from Flash to Unity.

  • just got the book\looks great

i downloaded the zip file but the battery package keeps crashing unity on load
    any advice

  • Unity crashes after importing the file batteries.unitypackage on a Unity Indie on Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Any ideas on how to work around that?

    Many thanks!

  • Hi Chico, there was an issue with the batteries package, it is being replace today or tomorrow but to save you waiting get it here -

  • David, sorry for the slow reply, there was an issue with the package, the publisher should be replacing it today or tomorrow, in the mean time you can get the updated version here -

  • batteries_3 did not work as well… Unity 3D crashed again…
    any ideas?

    chico

  • just for the record, my setup is:

    OSX 10.6.1 10B504 MBP Intel C2 D 2×2.53GHz 4 GB 256 MB

  • it did work with unity indie 2.6, though :)

  • Thanks for the battery package .I am using Unity 2,5 on PC
    I will try it out

  • congratulations on your book. was just wondering, (i’m a newbee) can unity be used to create an rts game?

  • Hi Will

    Great book!
I am teaching Unity to BTEC ND students at Traffrod College
    on game engines
I have used the book as a tutorial resource
The student loved the island creation in chapter 2

  • Arthur, yes definitely, Unity can be used to create any kind of game really – good place to start once you’ve nailed the basics may be to look at Angry Ant’s AI Path work, google him and you’ll find it.

  • David, great to hear, Hope they enjoy the rest of the book as much! Remember you can recommend your students download the new Unity for free now!

    Will

  • Thank you very much Will. you’ll be glad to know, i went out and bought the book before you replied!!! Just want to say thank you for producing such a good book. i’ve only just started on it but i can tell, a lot of work went into it. Cheers!!

  • My book is on the way!
Thanks so much to take the time to made it, I will be a great reference in my research

  • Thanks Navarro, hope you enjoy it!

    What a GREAT book!
I bought it twice, for support sake. Awesome!

Something I would like to share with you:

They’ve become quite popular on YouTube.
If you would like to use them, post them, embed them in spreading the Unity goodness, go right ahead!

  • Hi Will,
Just bought your book excellent stuff and as a compleate noob its really easy to follow,
One thing I’m up to chapter 4 and Ive followed the code for creating the PlayerCollisions script but I just can’t get it to work, is there a copy of this code in full so I can see where I’m going wrong?

Great book cant wait to finsh it

    Kevin

  • Hi Kevin, thanks for the praise! I’ll be able to tell you what is up with the script, just go to this site – http://www.pasteit4me.com and paste in what you have, then reply here with a link. There should be finished version of the scripts with the download pack too.

  • Dear Will gold stone,

I live in asia, if I want to get your book, so will company delivery it to me? or you have any way that I can get this lessons, by book or ebook is better for me? about ebook is the same to book, isn’t it?

  • Hi , your best bet is to order it from Amazon and have them deliver it to you directly I think. And yes the ebook is similar to the real book but in my mind the real book is easier to read through as you work.

  • Theres no info on multiplayer and networking? Other then that, its alright

  • Its these kind of 5 star reviews that keep me going some days. Oh and its ‘other than that’. Cheers for the comment!

  • Hey Will,

I enjoying youre book, unfortunly coding is hard for me (i’m a Graphic desinger trying to expand my world).
any way is there any change the book getting translated in dutch?

and could you make/write a tutorial for a real easy basix game it would really help me to get a grasp on scripting/coding.

    thanx!

  • Hi there thanks for the message, glad you’re enjoying the book, I wrote it for people like you looking to move across from design into interactive stuff. It is being translated into French but not dutch at present, sorry. There are simpler tutorials online for more basic games, feel free to drop me an email and I can point some out

  • I just ordered mine from Amazon. Due for delivery tomorrow. Good thing I’ll be delivering my paying project very soon. Hope to have some time to delve into Unity development.

  • Great! good luck with the project man, enjoy the book!

  • [...] the essentials unity book [...]

  • Bought, Seems like a clean start. Easy to start a new “Program” engine and get a book with it. Big + for that
