Unity 3.0 Preview!
In some bafflingly exciting news, Unity Technologies have announced and shown a preview video of Unity Version 3! Having doubled their engineering team the past year since Unity moved to Windows, UT have been working hard to create the next major release, touted to combine the existing Standard and iPhone version, plus new publishing abilities for xBox 360.
Some of the new features include
- Umbra Occlusion Culling – Unity have licensed Umbra, one of the most popular OC engines around, in order to help people create more refined mobile content with ease
- Source based Debug – A Big Leap for programmers, as this will mean you can pause testing, alter code and continue your test without checking functionality via logging or printing.
- Beast Lightmapping – UT throw another of the industry’s best engine bolt ons into the mix with Beast, the lightmapping engine seen in Killzone 2 and Mirror’s Edge, prepare for sexy results!
- Audio Awesomeness – Reverb, Sound filters, and general full ambient control brings sound into maturity in Unity 3, apparently!
- Deferred Rendering – this means you can now have hundreds of lights in your scene with minimal performance hit, amazing!
Here are some more images of the release -

your image viewer is showing up underneath all the other content…??
That sounds awesome! But I have my concerns – will the combining of Unity iPhone and Unity Basic (and their Pro counterparts into their set) mean the end of a free version of Unity?
I don’t want that to happen.
(not that I wouldn’t buy Unity Pro if I could, don’t get me wrong, I just can’t afford it…)
yeah not sure whats going on… some z index issue..
I hope that unity will still be free. Maby they’ll do it where you can only export it to iphone if you have the license.
@playbass06
unity 3 will have a free version and just the iphone export option is disabled.
