Came across this fantastic stylised game from French former Supinfogame students. A group of six developers calling themselves Uncanny games have released two videos and now a demo of their upcoming title ‘The Uncanny Fish Hunt’. Reminiscent in style of a fantastic mixture of recent indie hits such as Braid, it also reminded me personally of The Legend of Zelda : The Wind Waker – with it’s sailing and cute but awesome graphic style.

A big congratulations to Marion Audefray, Francois Cormier, Clement Lemaire, Romain Lerpince, Bruno Mabille and Mathieu Oldenhove for all their hard work on this, hope to see more from Uncanny Games in the future.

Go download the demo here – http://www.theuncannyfishhunt.com/?page_id=64

If you are a tutor who works with Unity in a high school, college or university, i’d love to discuss my research with you and maybe help you out too! please email at willgoldstone at gmail with the subject line ‘Unity Teaching‘, thanks!

DimeRocker is a Vancouver based Unity portal to help you launch your games on social networking sites. If you’re looking for an audience for your game, what better place to look than on social networks such as Facebook, which already has millions of active users already engaged in other games made in Unity and Flash. Even better than that, the guys at DimeRocker can help you use their API to integrate with Facebook and monetize your game content.

DimeRocker allows you to integrate with leaderboards, and links your content with the social nature of sites, allowing you to create an audience around your game that will play off against each other, discuss your game, and so on. They’ll also host the game, and scale hosting to the needs of the game as the audience grows, and let you track your progress in both monetization and simple statistics such as number of plays.

DimeRocker also has something they call the ‘Tune Up Program’ which is a service you can submit either prototypes or existing finished games and if they like your stuff, they’ll help you improve them to a point they can be included on Facebook and the like – in basic terms, if they find something they think can make you both money, they’ll help you get it in the right place, and tweak it to maximise the audience for the game – awesome!

Head on over to their site and take a look at some of their services, then have a listen to a recent TalkBack radio podcast with some of the guys from DimeRocker, hosted by Mani of InfiniteUnity3d.com.

Wishing everyone at Unity Technologies a Happy 5th Birthday.

Its been an amazing 5 years of progress, from humble beginnings as OTEE I’ve really enjoyed watching UT grow into the powerful innovative ‘powerhouse’ (yeah I went there!) it is today.

A Toast!

Nintendo nes power glove with Unity 3dI stumbled accross this amazing video / instructables tutorial set a few weeks back but only just had time to sit down and write about it. If you’re not a ludicrous NES fan like myself then perhaps this won’t be AS exciting as it was when I found it, but hey here goes anyway!

Many people have enjoyed experimenting with external devices to control Unity, the most prominent in this context being Darwiin remote (or PC equivalent) which has been used alongside the plugin on the wiki in order to use the Wiimote in conjunction with Unity.

So imagine my amazement when I came across someone who had managed to get a Nintendo Power Glove to do the same thing. Oh wait, you don’t recall the PowerGlove? oh dear, well lets get you up to speed as frankly it wasn’t the most succesful peripheral at the time..

The Power Glove was developed by Abrams Gentile Entertainment and Mattel and licensed by Nintendo in 1989 for the NES – a good four years into its tenure in our living rooms. It didn’t really do a whole lot but ostensibly was an early wii-like sign from Ninty that said they were willing to experiment with their products, and take the controller away from simply button bashing.

Placing buttons in the fingertips, and mimicking human movements inside the back of hand unit, the glove controlled games using gestures, but ultimately was highly innacurate, and was mostly ignored and mocked for its poor quality responses.

Fastforward to the glove’s 20th Anniversary, and a ludicrously intelligent chap called Matt Mechtley (who also develops those awesome games at Blurst.com over at Flashbang studios) has decided to take the power glove apart and combine it with arduino – a small interface technology you can look up here – in order to control games in software such as Unity. In his demo he finishes by controlling a simple primitive in Unity, and frankly it is astonishing what he has achieved with a few modifications via Arduino.

Here is Matt’s video ‘tutorial’ (in quotations there not negatively but simply as he doesn’t have time to explain each step) -

and here is a link to the Instructables.com page with more detail, epic props to you Matt!

Picture 2Starlings is an independent game developed by Russ Morris that I’ve been keeping an eye on for a while now. Its an original concept, something often rare in the gaming world these days (sorry to sound quite so cynical!) which involves the player building a flock of starlings from just a single bird in flight.

A fascinating idea for a game that blends puzzle, art and flight sim in one.

Check out the vimeo video below and then go and try the latest build on the site here. You can also read Russ’s development blog here.

Picture 2This amazing interactive ident by London studio HelloEnjoy really shows off the power of Unity on the web. Running perfectly, Carlos Ulloa’s drive around-a-logo handles perfectly too and shows what can be done with a simple beautfiul design and a cut down scene. The model looks fantastic, and even leaves skidmarks on handbreak turns!

Massive props to them for this awesome bit of Unity work, surpasses their previous letter gravity flash work with ease, not to sound biased or anything ;)

musegamessquare300Just came accross this excellent 3D game portal with a focus on Unity. Called Muse games, the site offers several playable games and an emphasis on community and giving new developers the chance to get their game seen on the site, and even sold via Muse’s exposure pipeline.

I’m really impressed by the professional look of the site and its staff and the existing content they have placed on there so far is of a very high standard, be prepared to get addicted to the Extreme sledding game! Also really interesting as they put an emphasis on multiplayer games too.

Get over there now and get involved, maybe even submit something to them?

robotzomsA truly gorgeous looking game has popped up in development with Unity. Geniusly titled ‘The Destruction of the World by a Violent Robot Zombie Plague’ the game is a 2.5D platformer that looks unlike anything you’ve seen done with Unity, and certainly looks – and plays – fantastically on the web.

That’s right, you can play it, so what on earth are you doing here taking my word for it? Go try it out and be sure to check out the amazing concept art and site in general, looks like the work of some serious talent going on…

The game is developed and will be released for free by Interactive Art Agency, Hook. Go check out their site as its also pretty stunning!

iphone-large1The very generous Kevin R of vectorboxgames.com has donated his recent work with Unity iPhone, creating an example Pong project for you to download and pick apart and learn from. Now his game is finished it available on the App Store, Details on the game are here -
http://www.vectorboxgames.com/vong/index.html

I know a lot of people have been waiting for this so a massive thanks to Kevin on behalf of all those users for his hard work!

Here is what Kevin has to say about the project download -

This was my first Unity game. I decided to give the project up to the community as another resource to learn from. I currently have it up on the appstore, but as a free download.

It’s a clone of Pong.

The code for this game was written in Javascript. There isn’t a ton of commenting, but the code is relatively clean (for a first project), so it should be a fairly good resource to learn from. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

It covers the use of menus, accelerometer and touch controls, 2D using 3D elements, and more. It’s a full game.

As far as licensing goes… consider it the same as any other resource in the Unity Resources section. If UT want’s to add it to the resources section, that is fine by me.

And here’s a download link to the example -
